The Islands of Turks & Caicos
Relatively unknown except to scuba divers and lovers of beautiful beaches, the islands of Turks and Caicos are the Caribbean's best kept secret. A visit here is ideal for romantics who seek a relaxing vacation in a peaceful, natural setting. The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of eight islands and many smaller cays at the southeastern tip of the Bahamas chain. Providenciales, known as Provo, is the most developed of all the islands, complete with an international airport and several major resort hotels. Breathtaking nature preserves have stunning sites including salt lakes, caves and limestone cliffs.
The Turks and the Caicos groups are separated by the Turks Island Passage, a 22 mile channel over 7,000 ft deep which connects the Atlantic and the Caribbean, contributing to the area's profusion of marine life.

Generally, the windward sides of the islands are made up of limestone cliffs and sand dunes, while the leeward sides have more lush vegetation. The islands of Grand Turk, Salt Cay and South Caicos are very dry, having had their trees felled by salt rakers long ago to discourage rain. The other islands have slightly more rain but very little soil and most of the vegetation is scrub and cactus. Providenciales, or more commonly known as "Provo", covers an area of 38 miles and is the most developed island in Turks and Caicos.
To the north of the island, near Sapodilla Bay, you will find the most beautiful beaches, and also a long coral reef which is rich in aquatic life. Towards the south of the island you will find Chalk Sound, a large lake with striking turquoise water and an array of small cays. The island's commercial port, South Dock, is found east of Sapodilla Bay and has the capability to deal with containerized goods. There is no recognized rainy season, and temperatures average 75°-85°F from Nov to May, reaching into the 90°s from June to Oct, but constant tradewinds keep life comfortable. Average annual rainfall is 21 inches on Grand Turk and South Caicos but increases to 40 inches as you travel westwards through the Caicos Islands where more lush vegetation is found.
